We are often known at Results Fitness for saying that we design programs, not just workouts. But what exactly do we mean by this? What in the heck is the big difference between a program and a workout?

 

Well, a program is your overall training plan that is written based upon a goal. Plan being the key operating word here. A plan is about manipulating acute training variables strategically over time.  A daily workout is a part of this plan, and the proper sequencing of multiple workouts or daily training sessions is a portion of programming. But looked at purely by itself, without respect to the rest of the overall plan, the workout itself doesn’t really amount to or mean all that much. 

 

We start by planning the big picture training variables first, then break things all the way down to the individual workout level lastly. Inexperienced programmers/coaches will often typically start in the opposite manner and start with a mentality of “What I exercises am going to do today?” and design a random workout for an individual day without any regard to what the long-term plan is. This is a poor approach as we want to be able to attain expected results that we get from executing our plans, and not have these results happen haphazardly as a side effect from a random workout.

Six Week Plan for Busy Times
This program is designed to be a short term plan for the intermediate (non-beginner) that can be used during a busy time in life that lasts approximately 4-6 weeks or so.The workout consists of 4 main parts:RAMP (range of motion, activation and movement prep)Core trainingStrength work - working up to one heavy set and then doing a back-off set for max repsResistance training Circuit: a density block where you perform as many sets as you can in a short period of timeWorkout including warm-ups will be 30 - 40minsWeekly, we are using what we call an A/B split. It is two different full body sessions that are designed to be alternated 2-3 days per week.
